This private Danish sauna sits in the calm province of Christiania, Freetown in the heart of Copenhagen. Christiania is a peaceful freetown that has a rich history of free speech, protests, and individuality.
Exterior perspective looking at the private sauna and public space
This sauna celebrates this history by using a sequence of spaces to represent the timeline of Christiania's independence from Denmark and the journey of the sauna experience. The building material changes from stone to wood cladding to bright pink paint to celebrate the bright graphic artists of the free town.
The buildings represent the journey of a sauna from the hot of the sauna to the cool depths of the river by the different volumes and darkness of each building, allowing the user to be reborn in this intimate experience.
