a garden designed around a dogwood

Tucked into the generous views of Queen Anne, Dogwood Garden shapes spaces out of planters. The garden required the strict orderliness of steel planters so the plants themselves could soften the edges. The important existing dogwood tree is embraced by two a black-stained fences.

existing conditions …

The clients wanted to preserve their existing dogwood tree while creating privacy and a working cutting garden.

The existing backyard was too open and the lawn creeped unevenly towards all edges. In the landscape design, the team wanted to create and define spaces for plants and people while maintaining access and views out towards downtown Seattle.

The black-stained entry fence and gate mark the boundary between the existing driveway and the new garden. A large steel planter includes native plants and a stone that was inspired by Japanese Gardens.

The construction of the fence around the existing Dogwood was done delicately and carefully. The team was hopeful that the Dogwood would survive the stress. Down its protected and celebrated. The deep greens of the leaves contrast with the black-stained fence.
